My First Digital Collage

I have been playing with Photoshop and created this digital collage from three images. The window (black opening) and door covered in metal sheets are from the same house. The horses were added because it needed something on the left and they fit the mood. For me it is ghost or dream like. I really like the textures of the wood and rusted metal and door knob.

Why is this barn or house abandoned? Are the horses gone or lonely? Was it once a thriving farm or ranch? Mystery!

The bottom version is the same but with a black border as if from printing. What do you think of the piece? Which version do you prefer? Is the black border effective?

This was quite fun to do and I want to play with more images in combination.

i like it debra.
for me the horses seem a little displaced as i like the emptiness of the window. i also like the wind blown flaps - metal sheets- covering the window. (ha, isn't that something - wind blown metal sheets! it kind of dictates the whole feel for me of outside warmth and inside emptiness protected by cold, hard, unmovable metal which on the surface looks like it is moving freely in the wind but is in fact as cold, hard and unmovable as metal sheets are. an invitation to come in but a cold shoulder once you approach. you are not going to be welcomed in). the horses just don't seem to fit especially as i can see the trees in the background, it spoils the forsaken aspect of it all.
i like the colours - the warmth of the barn against the cold of the blues which again cover/protect the inside - this hints at the forlorn to me. it is also a warning to keep away. it looks safe on the outside, but no, you don't belong here. there is something in here, something that isn't for you, something a whole world away that was and is not now. it is opposite to the warmth and welcome of its outside. this of course is turned around as usually the inside is warmer and more welcoming but this collage smacks of what was and not what we can share now. it is lonely, isolated and sad and this is emphasized by the heart in the center of the window - dripping rust? ceased up, never used, long forgotten - abandoned. we cannot be part of it although once it was warm and welcoming.

what do you think of all that? this is just my thoughts on your picture. you know, some people think that once you put something 'out there' it belongs to the eyes that view it. you give it up to the viewer and really cannot dictate what they should be seeing or their interpretation of it. does that upset you or do you think that is the role of a photograph, painting etc.?

Wow! That is a lot to think about. I will post one without the horses. I didn't think of them not fitting, but I can seeit. They were actually behind the tree branchesand I fixed it to use them. I originally just took the horses to please the boys. I agree the art belongs to the viewer and their interpretation.
